Mutual dependency is a phenomenon whereby system members (individuals or organisations) rely on one another in a reciprocal manner. In such systems, members rely on each other for sustaining their sense of safety and security, as well as their physical and emotional needs. Thus, a mutually dependent system is one in which members are dependant on each other to maintain its balance and equilibrium. In order to survive and thrive in such a system, members need to be aware of each other’s needs and how their behaviours contribute to the dynamics of the system. In a sense, this encourages a heightened sense of interdependence among members.
